This home, once the perfect bachelor pad for a busy surgeon, had to re-invent itself STAT to accommodate a new marriage, including the addition of two teenagers. While the majority of the open living space was originally designed for entertaining large groups of friends, it quickly became chaotic and noisy for this family of four. In addition, the bedrooms were small and there were only two bathrooms-a nightmare for the teenage boy and girl to share. Furthermore, there was little breathing room for the doctor's work at home, or for the couple to enjoy some private time together.
Since the home was located on a modest-sized lot, there was a limited footprint for expansion possibilities. After researching the available options, the clients chose to add a two story addition to the rear of the home while updating all existing interior areas. The result was a beautiful and functional layout that perfectly compliments the family's lifestyle.

Even though the kitchen area had been previously remodeled, both its practicality and workmanship were severely lacking. We incorporated a noise-minimizing glass and steel range venting system which was mounted at the exterior to reduce noise while providing the high efficiency required. We also increased counter and cabinet space and added a walk-in pantry for bulk food and supplies. The new under cabinet drawer-style microwave helps keep the counters clutter free. The unique island sink adds charter and functionality to the chiseled granite counter top.
Master Bedroom (4 images)
The existing home had a small bedroom with an open wash area in the room. The toilet and shower with housed in separate room. The closet was very small. The new plan allows for space and comfort in a large master bedroom, complete with sitting areas, building in TV and fireplace. Large doors allow for walk out to the pool and patio.
Master Bathroom (3 images)
Walk-in closets and a luxurious master bath with dual-control showerheads and separate vanities, complete the vision of luxury living. Functionality is hard at work here, too. For the physician’s late night calls, a coffee bar and beverage refrigerator are located close to the master bedroom in the hall to his home office which is privately contained from the rest of the house.

The home’s second story features a spacious, private guest suite, comfortable and efficient enough for extended vacation stays. There is a large desk area near picture windows with views of the surrounding mountain landscape and a walkout deck overlooking the pool below –complete with a refreshing misting system.
Exterior Rear (4 images)
The back yard was cut off from the main living areas of the home. Bedrooms were located at the rear of the structure. In a previous remodel a door was installed to allow access to the back yard and pool. Although an asset for the pool, it was not desirable to go through the main bathroom to the yard. The new design moved the family room to the rear of the home and provided large doors to the yard and new covered patio. A new dedicated bathroom accessible from the pool area negated guests and family from needing to go through the home to use the facilities.
Exterior Front (2 images)
The front area of the home was left more or less intact. The back portion of the dwelling was demolished.
By setting the second floor addition to the rear of the home and leaving the front areas seemingly untouched the new structure does not impose into the street-scape.
